Within Reason is an in-house app by Brave New Design, built around a simple question: what deserves to come with you into a new day?
The idea
A daily notebook should give your writing a home without asking you to build a system around it. Within Reason uses the date as its structure: one page for each day you use it, with native interfaces for Mac, iPhone, and iPad.
The defining interaction is thoughtful continuity. When a new daily page is created, headings and unchecked items carry forward from the latest earlier entry. Ordinary writing, completed items, photos, and files stay with their original date. Missed days remain absent rather than becoming empty pages.
Designing for a fresh start
The product balances a useful starting point with a preserved record. Headings keep the structure you chose, and open checkboxes keep unfinished intentions visible. Everything else has a place in the past without taking over today.
Native rich text provides body text, three heading levels, bold, italic, links, and simple checkboxes. Inline images and file attachments keep supporting material alongside the writing. The interface offers enough structure to help without turning a notebook into project management.
A history with depth
History gives the notebook a sense of time, with earlier pages receding behind the selected day. Browsing is read-only, while Editor view allows changes to any selected stored date. Editing an older entry does not rebuild later pages.
Current-page and all-days search return a thought to its original context. Highlighted matches and a headings-only filter make the notebook easier to revisit as it grows.
Personal by design
Entries and attachments save on the device, with a private iCloud container used for syncing when iCloud Drive is available. There is no separate app account, advertising, tracking, analytics SDK, or AI-service processing of writing. Brave New Design does not receive entries through the app.
Markdown export makes an individual day’s writing portable, including attachment references. Opening or sharing an attachment hands the destination a separate copy of the stored file.
